Overview

I  worked with Chicago-based artist Alex Chitty on a redesign of her portfolio.

She had hundreds of pieces to present, all falling into loose categories.

Alex and I both have an interest in artists’ books and we kept coming back to the idea of the book being a piece in and of itself. We kept that concept and the idea of a hyperlinked catalog raisonne as the guiding light for the project.

The result was a sprawling documentation of over a decade of artistic production with multiple points of entry for navigating and exploring.

Categories

Alex wanted to categorize her work using broad terms.

We gave each category a visual representation using unicode icons.

Descriptive catalog vs. Visual Catalog

Another guiding concept for Alex and I was the internet before platforms, when you could potentially get lost on a website and you might come across something completely out of left field.

I took that concept and built a visual index, in addition to the catalog like entry that viewers are originally presented with.

Related works

To help with the early internet feel, we added a “related” section in each catalog entry. The related section gives viewers a look into Alex’s thinking, and an experience that feels rooted in that early internet experience just as much as it does paging through a physical catalog.
